Because it has been so damn long since I posted anything here I thought I would just show a few of the guitars I have built in the last year. I'll start with the most recent

Its a small jumbo with a 13th fret neck joint, Bearclaw Sitka spruce soundboard, koa back and sides, arm bevel, koa pices of trim in the headstock and bridge. It's got the lot!

Next are a pair of very different brothers. One is another small Jumbo (I'll give the shape a name soon) and an Oxwich Parlour, both have spruce tops and rosewood back and sides with ebony bridges and neck and walnut binding but the Oxwich has a European spruce top whereas the Jumbo has an Adirondack top. The Oxwich has indian Rosewood back and sides and the jumbo has Honduran rosewood

My wife gave birth to our beautiful son Oscar in February a whole 2 months earlier than planned and from then on it has been a whirlwind.
Unfortunately Oscar was born with a complex heart condition which required open heart surgery to correct, but all did not go to plan and we sadly lost him in July.
We have been on a roller coaster ride since Oscars birth as he spent his entire life in different hospitals but we are determined to turn our tragedy into something positive to help other families like ours.

So we have now embarked on a series of fundraising campaigns the first of which is a coffee morning to be held here in my workshop with all money raised going to Oscar's Adventures charities.

In addition to this first event we are also planning an acoustic open mic night later on in the year and a children's story book. Watch this space for more updates on these events.

To find our more about the charities we are supporting and donate in memory of Oscar you can find everything you need to know by clicking here or visiting our facebook page.

I hope to see you on the 13th to enjoy a relaxed cuppa and delicious bite to eat in aid of some amazing charities that are extremely close to my heart.

I have just moved into a much larger workshop in Abergavenny, about 7 miles from my old workshop. Once I have everything in order, it will be a nicer experience for me to work in and for others to visit, some nice pictures will follow when I get some more benches up and get everything in order.

The new address is;
Lower ground floor,

First up is the return of the Terz guitar, in a 14 fret resonator form. It'll be all sycamore; back, sides, top, neck and binding. The cone is hand spun by Beard Guitars in the US of A and is the smallest one they make. Cramming everything into such a small body is an interesting challenge but great fun!

Next is a custom guitar shape; a small jumbo in... mostly cocobolo. The soundboard is Sitka spruce and the neck is laminated lacewood, back sides, fingerboard, bridge, headstock veneers (front and back) and laminations are cocobolo. To buck the trend the bindings are ebony.

The neck is joining the body at the 13th fret, there will be a sound port, only 16 frets... should be a nice one!

If Colin Owen is reading this, your P bass body is finished but the phone number you gave me is missing a digit so I can't get in touch to let you know!

Give me a ring when you see this... if you see it, or if anyone knows Colin please let him know!

A big congratulations to Bob who, after more years than he cares to remember, has been coming to my workshop to build his own guitar and here are the fruits of his labour. Sitka soundboard, reclaimed mahogany back, sides and neck, ebony bridge, fingerboard, headstock veneer and binding.

The mahogany was originally a cupboard door from an old chest that was being thrown out. Turns out is was a beautiful piece of 'hog that Bob had resawn at a local joinery (who have a bigger and better bandsaw than me) and voila... Pretty good no?Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17335656802124502575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6293374570549627929.post-42704064139919994972013-03-13T21:12:00.000+00:002013-03-13T21:12:45.432+00:00Ok, so I haven't updated this blog in a while but the two guitars are finished and another is well on it's way...
A 12 fret Cilgerran in Carpathian spruce and Cocobolo rosewood... and 6.5 metres of abalone purfling!! Its tone is opening up nicely. It already has the clarity and resonance you'd expect from rosewood and spruce with great balance of tones... and it's sparkly.

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that bling!

On to to the Oxwich. This one is already winging it's way across Europe to it's new home in Austria. The combination of Cedar and Walnut makes for a beautiful picker which has more volume than you'd expect from such a wee beastie.

There's something about 12 fret guitars that I absolutely love. Maybe its the balance, the body length, the bridge placement, but it just works really well... In my opinion anyway.

On to the next.
Another Oxwich, this time in Sitka pruce and Walnut. Built using native woods where possible, the guitar is Celtic themed, so I am using my knotwork rosette and coupling it with a very ornate set of purfling from Petros guitars. The neck is sycamore, fingerboard is bog oak, binding is oak and the headstock veneer is a bookmatched piece of Burl Yew from a local churchyard.

This guitar will also have some Welsh script etched with a laser cutter onto the soundboard thanks to Steph at http://www.stephaniedaviesdesigns.co.uk/ who does great work and also makes my knotwork rosettes and wooden logosRichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17335656802124502575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6293374570549627929.post-82178392301314644542012-12-28T21:04:00.002+00:002012-12-28T21:04:37.828+00:00My 3 Minutes of fame....

I've finally got around to uploading the snippet featuring me on Fishlock's Wales back in April. The program was all about being left handed, the oppression in Victorian education, how the brain functions differently and how a left handed guitar is different. I think it was a happy coincidence that I am a leftie too!

If anyone is interested, the guitar I'm playing at the beginning is a European spruce and Mahogany Cilgerran and the tune I'm murdering is Jefferson airplane's 'Embryonic Journey'

Thanks to Bob for recording the show for me.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17335656802124502575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6293374570549627929.post-50190152767794662952012-11-20T20:47:00.000+00:002012-11-20T20:47:23.425+00:00Ok, the two guitars are coming along together, the bodies are all but done and the binding is coming along on the cilgerran.

Binding on the Oxwich is figured maple with purfling around the edges and soundboard
Necks next, as well as a couple of full body shotsRichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17335656802124502575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6293374570549627929.post-79571254766054444212012-10-09T20:45:00.000+01:002012-11-20T20:48:07.167+00:00Lovely pair...I've decided to build my next two guitars in tandem. Different body shapes, so each can spend time in its own mould but it'll be easier to make a batch of braces, do a lot of thicknessing etc, not to mention having less dust over a long period to clean up. That's the idea anyway.

The first is a Cilgerran 12 fret. The soundboard is Carpathian spruce with back and sides of Cocobolo. For those of you who are interested, Carpathian spruce Picea Abies is the same as German, Italian, Swiss.... any European Spruce but it grows in the Carpathian mountains in Eastern Europe. It is typically quite slow growing, showing tight grain lines that we like although heavy logging by the Soviets means that often the rings are rather wide at the edges of the board. Not so with this piece, very nice grain with little runout, lots of cross silking and a lovely tap tone already. Not content with beautiful tonewoods, the future owner of this guitar has specified abalone trim galore; around the soundhole, around the edge of the soundboard, around the back, along the binding on the sides (top and bottom), around the heel of the guitar, around the end fillet and around the fingerboard extension over the soundboard, not to mention an ornate inlay on the headstock and fingerboard markers... I think that's everything. The end result will be my take on Martin's 45 range of guitars. It'll be a thing of beauty when finished!
Next up is an Oxwich parlour in Walnut, I love the size and sound of parlour guitars and Walnut, particularly Claro Walnut is my favourite wood for back and sides, if nothing else, then for the lovely woody smell. The wood has a great tone as an added bonus, plus it looks great!

The soundboard is a really nice piece of Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata for those into their Romans) that I have had in stock for a little while waiting for the right opportunity
This month I was also fortunate enough to be a finalist in two categories in the Monmouthshire business awards in the young entrepreneur and best rural enterprise categories. Although I didn't win, Sammie and I had a very nice evening eating delicious food at the glitzy awards ceremony and dinner at the Angel hotel in Abergavenny. Its great to see so many businesses doing well in our (well, my) neck of the woods.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17335656802124502575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6293374570549627929.post-45793602422783902132012-09-15T20:36:00.000+01:002012-09-15T20:36:38.368+01:00Ladies and gentleman- The Thumb buster!Right, the harp guitar is all finished and at it's new home. Instead of putting up pictures of it outside my workshop, this time I can (hopefully) link to a video of it in action played by Paul Brett, who's idea and inspiration it was to get this thing up and running... again, the original harp guitar that this monster is based on dated from the 1890s and the concept hasn't been taken up since
well after a long journey in the back of at least 3 vans the Terz guitar eventually made it up to Lanarkshire so I can show it off for all to see here. As you might expect from such a small bodied guitar it responds very well to a light touch- no heavy strummers please. Its great for gentle fingerpicking whilst on the sofa watching TV its new owner assures me! I have another Terz in the pipeline for early next year.

...And so on to the next one. I've been working with guitarist Paul Brett to resurrect an idea for a harp guitar from the late 19th century. What makes it different from usual harp guitars (if there is such a thing!) is that the extra bass strings are played with the thumb of the left hand. Paul was keen to take inspiration from the original design and use environmentally sound materials so we settled on oak for the back and sides as per the original, Sitka spruce from a naturally fallen tree, sycamore for the neck and neck dowel, bog oak fingerboard, bridge and head veneer and English walnut binding. The body is based on my 12 fret Cilgerran model. Hopefully it'll be finished by the end of the week so I'll put up a couple of completed pics.

I was building it to demonstrate methods and techniqes alongside Richard who was building his own. He finished his in 2011 (see a few blogs down) and I... didn't. The Rhossili got left behind whilst I worked on commissions and repairs but its all finished and sounds and plays lovely.

The soundboard is Sitka spruce,
Back and sides are Claro Walnut
Neck is Sapele
Fingerboard, bridge pins and headstock veneer are ebony
Bridge is Indian Rosewood
Binding is figured maple
Tuners are Grover sta tites
This Rhossili brings my total number of stock guitars to two and is also for sale at £1300. If you would like to come and give it and its stablemate (well, cupboardmate) a european spruce and mahogany Cilgerran a play you are most welcome.

The Terz is nearly done, body and neck are finished and buffed ready for assembly, bridge and setup
A little update to the Terz guitar; it's coming along very well, only the frets and logo to go on before lacquering (and a LOT of sanding). To avoid tearing the grain when routing the binding ledges I give the edges of the body a coat of shellac, it also stops glue sticking to the bits of wood where you don't want it.

As some of you may know, last month I was catapaulted to the heights of fame and fortune by being interviewed for ITV Wales' 'Fishlocks Wales'. The theme for the programme was left handedness, as a left handed guitar maker I was asked to explain the differences between left and right handed guitars and why there aren't more left handed guitarists etc... One question stuck in my mind 'are there and left handed tools you use?' My answer was no; I get by pretty well with normal equipment, but one tool always catches me out and that's using my vernier calipers.

The are the only hand tool or measuring tool that have to be used right handed- otherwise they are upside down or back to front... not good for reading measurements to two decimal places so an internet search came up with these; the left handed calipers! shown with their dextrous sibling on the latest soundboard. I don't much like the digital readout and the fact you have to remember to turn the thing off everytime but hopefully it'll make life easier... not that it was particularly hard before... stupid whims!

More guitar making stuff next time I promise!

The idea of this guitar is that the pitch (and tension) of the strings is the same as if a normal guitar were capoed at the third fret but with a much smaller body.
Modelled after one of his own guitars, the customer has asked for a simple guitar with little ornamentation but using beautiful woods. Back, sides and neck are of mahogany, soundboard is bearclaw sitka spruce, binding is Koa, fingerbaord, bridge and head veneer are are Ziricote. Its going to make for a very nice (if tiny) guitar!

I have some nice comissions lined up this summer so watch this space...
Ok, another guitar rolls off the factory production line! This Oxwich was picked up on Tuesday by its new happy owner. Its a lovely little thing with a big sound and heart. The brief, as I mentioned in the last post waaay back in october was to make a guitar using local, Welsh timber where possible. For the most part I succeded in sourcing Welsh woods, apart from the soundboard; softwood in Britain grows too fast to be of any use for instrument makers.

The real revelation in this build was using bog oak for the fingerboard and bridge. Bog oak has been sat in the ground for anywhere up to tens of thousands of years, the older it is, the closer to petrified it becomes, the piece I used on this guitar still felt very much like oak to work, just jet black but the beautiful medullary rays found in oak very much on show. I look forward to using bog oak again... If anymore gets ploughed up in the local fields.

One was a classical guitar built in Nicuragua, its a nice instrument using local tonewoods; it'd be nice to have mahogany and Cocobolo growing in your back garden. The frets were a weak point of the guitar, stoned badly and made of a poor quality metal. The customer also wanted a slight camber on the fingerboard to help with those awkward classical positions. The next refret was to a tenor banjo, this refret was unusual in that the fingerboard was made of celluloid imitation mother of pearl (sometimes called mother of toilet seat) so a slightly different technique was called for. Instead of hammering in the frets as I would normally do with a wooden fingerboard I pressed them in using a caul and glued them in place using thin superglue, this stopped the fingerboard from cracking when installing the frets.

Another job, a bit out of the ordinary for me was to make a 'strat' style body with Humbucker- single coil- Humbucker routing and more exaggerated contouring. Lots of routing, sanding and rasping the outcome was very nice.

I'm off on Holiday for the next few weeks. If you are in the area at the end of the month the craft centre, where my workshop is, is showing a couple of my guitars as well as a work in progress (back, sides and front in pieces) as part of an exhibition, so if you are interested in seeing the inside of a guitar, some of my instruments and a nice cup of tea and cake then drop in.

Details on the website ( I think)
Whilst his aim at the beginning was to build himself a guitar which first and foremost had good tone with looks coming a distant second, he pretty quickly succumbed to pretty woods and shiny bits of shell. He's ended up with a guitar that looks great and sounds great too, the sound will continue to improve over the coming days, weeks and months as the wood loosens up and things settle down. The soundboard is European spruce. Back sides and neck are Claro Walnut. Binding and end fillet are Very figured Koa, fingerboard and front headstock veneer are ebony while the back veneer and bridge are burr oak and Indian Rosewood respectively. Rosette is abalone, the finish is Nitro cellulose over french polish.
Well done Richard and thanks for the canoe!

My new guitar is the first of a new body shape for me, my usual long scale length and a neck that joins the body at the 14th fret. Continuing the theme of naming my guitars after places I have fond memories of from summer holidays camping in West Wales this is the Rhossili model and will be on my website just as soon as I take some flashy photos of it. This particular guitar has a sitka spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides, Koa binding ( that I managed to use before Richard nabbed the rest of it) reclaimed Mahogany neck Rosewood bridge and ebony fingerboard and headstock veneer. Its a bit of a departure for me as I usually build guitars suited for fingerpicking and this is a bit more of an all rounder, the harder sitka spruce usually favours plectrum playing but we'll see as the sound opens up.
First up is a Martin 000-18 reissue owned by nick from the excellent blues duo http://www.mikemarkeyandnickjones.com/index.htm with a loose bridge. Sometimes if a bridge is only a little loose on the corners, then a little glue can simply be injected and then clamped but this one was pretty loose so it had to come off. I use a variety of knives to get underneath the bridge. Its a tricky process, great care has to be taken not to slip the knife into the soft spruce of the soundboard or put a knife through the finish but after a few minutes and a loud 'pop' the bridge comes off.

Once the bridge was off, I scraped off the old glue residue from the bridge and soundboard. Its very important to have a very wood to wood glue join in order for the glue to perform. The bridge is one of the most critical glue joins on a guitar as it has to take the load of the strings. Once I glued the bridge on and left it clamped up for a day I spent some time at the buffing wheel to touch up a few lacquer cracks which had developedover time, then the guitar was restrung and sent out the door.

Another job was to refret a very nice but much used parlour guitar made by Pete Howlett. The frets were first removed. I use a soldering iron to heat the fret and a little lemon oil to soften and lubricate the wire before using special pliers to gently ease the frets out. Once out the fingerboard was prepared, sanded flat and any chip outs repaired. Then the new frets were installed. This guitar has binding, so the ends of the tangs have to be removed so that only the top of the crown is on top of the binding. Once the frets were installed I then levelled and reprofiled them prior to restringing. After this the guitar was a real beauty to play and should be good for many years yet.

The last week or so has been relativley light on repairs coming in so I've had a chance to catch up on some guitar building which has had to take a bit of a back seat recently. You can see the body ready to go and the neck being aligned before gluing on the fingerboard. Visible is the mortise and tenon I use to attach the neck. Not visible are the bolts that locate through the soundhole to secure the neck in place. Sometimes a neck will need a little adjustment left or right to ensure proper alignment, I do this by shaving slivers off the cheeks of the neck but this one was pretty good already. You can also see my new Gizmo for checking the alignment of the neck and body, it centers itself on the neck shaft and projects the centreline down onto the body. This isn't any more accurate than the method I previously used but it does save a lot of fiddling about with rulers and straight edges! I've been building this guitar alongside Richard, my 'student' who is learning to build his own guitar, his is getting very near to finishing so I'll post a couple of pics of his finished instrument when it's done, It's a figured Walnut and Euorpean spruce OM sized beaut!

This week I've had a workshop full of repairs in, finish repairs, bridge reglues, refrets setups so I'll be kept busy for the next week. Pics to follow.

Also I couldn't resist showing off a few pictures of my honeybees, the colony is very big and gathering lots of honey, I have 2 supers (boxes full of honey) on and touch wood will have a good crop of honey this year.

Hello, welcome to my new blog.

I thought I'd start off with a few pictures of my latest guitar, it's quite rare I get to build an archtop and this one is a little different from my usual Manorbiers. It is built using laminated woods rather than solid carved timbers. This makes building a little easier as I don't have to spend weeks carving the soundboard and back, although it is tricky and time consiming laying up all the laminates. The reasoning behind using laminates instead of solid woods is that solid soundboards and backs are prone to feedback on electric archtops at high volume.

No such problems so far, and it has been to a high volume, The woods used are laminated sitka spruce for the soundboard, maple/ poplar/maple laminates for the back and sides, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge and mother of pearl inlays on the headstock and fingerboard, finish is Nitro cellulose.

The pickups were hound wound by David of heavy air pickups and sound great!

Many thanks to the Manorbiers' new owner Bob for the lovely photos.

I will have a new guitar available soon, the prototypes are finished and sound very promising, so watch this space!
